By then transmitting this information to a <strong>central platform<\/strong> that collects and processes the data, managers can evaluate the behavior of the structures and materials to predict any changes and quickly understand what type of actions to make the structure safe.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/1&#8243;][vc_custom_heading uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;721228&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Safer infrastructures thanks to EIT Smart and Itaca: The case of the Marconi Express<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_custom_heading][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;884228&#8243;]EIT Smart and <a href=\"https:\/\/itacaiot.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Itaca<\/strong><\/a>, an innovative startup that offers a complete<strong> infrastructure monitoring<\/strong> service, have collaborated to guarantee the <strong>safety of the Marconi Express<\/strong>, a monorail line, which, with a length of approximately 5 kilometers, connects Bologna&#8217;s Guglielmo Marconi Airport to the station Bologna Centrale railway.<\/p>\n<p>The intervention involved the application of<strong> 50 sensors for the structural monitoring<\/strong> of the thermal expansions of the Bologna&#8217;s Marconi Express infrastructure. The devices are composed of a unit equipped with a <strong>0G Sigfox radio module<\/strong> connected to linear potentiometric displacement transducers that <strong>monitor the distance<\/strong> between the tracks with a precision of a <strong>tenth of a millimetre.<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image media=&#8221;2248&#8243; media_width_percent=&#8221;100&#8243; uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;188384&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/1&#8243;][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;209077&#8243;]The aim of the application is to remotely monitor the state of the transport infrastructure in order to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Guarantee service continuity<\/strong>, promptly detecting any failures that could lead to system downtime as well as potential safety problems<\/li>\n<li><strong>Enable the implementation<\/strong> of predictive maintenance logics through the creation of artificial intelligence algorithms and increase the timeliness and effectiveness of railway maintenance activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The devices are programmed to <strong>collect movement<\/strong> and temperature information and send it every 2 hours via the 0G Sigfox network. The data collected in this way is displayed and shared via a <strong>web application<\/strong>.
